- To improve the English language ability of its student body, National Taiwan Normal University (hereinafter referred to as “this University”) has prescribed these National Taiwan Normal University Common Core English Course Enrollment Guidelines.
- During their study at NTNU, undergraduates of this University are required to enroll in six (6) credits of common core English courses, these being: English (I), English (II), and English (III). Each course shall be worth two (2) credits and must be taken in sequential order. In principle, courses are taught sequentially. Students who have not finished English (I) may not enroll in English (II). If the student’s semester grade in English (I) is not passing, but he/she still achieves as a grade of D or higher, the student may first enroll in English (II) the next semester before later re-enrolling in English (I).
- First year undergraduates of this University will be placed in either English (I) or English (II) depending on their test scores. Students may apply for a transfer between these two courses within the first two (2) weeks of class. Following the approval of their course instructor, students may transfer to a course more in line with their English proficiency and learning circumstances. Transfers can only be done between different course levels; no transfers shall be allowed between courses of the same level. Furthermore, no transfers will be allowed in the second semester. The placement, transfer, and enrollment of students into English (I) and English (II) shall be handled by the Common Core Education Committee Foreign Language Education Division. English (III) shall be enrolled in by the students themselves.
- If third year or higher undergraduates of this University meet the exemption requirements for common core English courses (see Attachment 1), in the period starting from a week prior to the beginning of the semester through the first week of the semester, they may submit an application for course exemption to the relevant academic or administrative unit along with proof of language ability from the past three years. Late applications will not be accepted.
- Academic credits of common core English courses for which the student has been exempt shall count towards totals credits for graduation. If the student has already added the exempted course, he/she should drop the course using the add/drop system. Courses which have not been dropped within the time allotted will be later deleted by the Office of Academic Affairs.
- Common core English courses for students studying in the Department of English shall be prescribed separately.
- These Guidelines, and any ensuing revisions, shall be implemented following its passage at a meeting of the Academic Affairs Committee.
